Lansing, MI - Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex to be lowered to half-staff on Saturday, April 6 to honor and remember former state Representative Michael “Mike” Griffin.

“Representative Mike Griffin was dedicated to serving his constituents, ensuring their voices were heard and their needs addressed,” said Governor Whitmer. “A champion for his district, he advocated for legislation that would make a real difference in people’s lives. His passion for public service and commitment to his community left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of working with him. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who worked and served with him.”

Former state Representative Griffin graduated from St. John's Catholic High School and pursued his higher education at the University of Michigan, where he studied public administration. After completing his degree, he embarked on a career in manufacturing, working in Aeroquip and Acme Industries until the age of 40, when he transitioned his career into government.

Former state Representative Griffin’s journey in public service began with his election to the Jackson City Commission in 1967, where he served until 1972. Following his tenure in local government, he represented the 50th District in the State House of Representatives from 1973 to 1992. Subsequently, he continued his legislative service by representing the 64th District in the State House from 1993 to 1998. Throughout his tenure, Rep. Griffin remained dedicated to serving his constituents and advocating for their interests at both the local and state levels.

Former state Representative is survived by his wife, Janet Griffin with whom he shared 65 years of marriage, and together they raised seven children. They also have eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The State of Michigan recognizes the duty, honor, and service of former State Representative Mike Griffin by lowering flags to half-staff. To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The process is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.

Flags should be returned to full staff on Sunday, April 7, 2024.
