Message from the Executive Office

Independence Day is a special time for all of us to reflect on and celebrate the many things that make us uniquely American, the freedoms we enjoy, and the traditions we hold most dear. Here at FIM, we recognize the great privilege to provide programming as varied as the people who make up our diverse nation. We have the honor of telling hundreds of stories every season through music, theatre, and dance, with the understanding that not every story will appeal to every person. But this provides space for people to discover new things about their own heritage and history, as well as those of others. The performing arts have a transformative power to unite our audiences across cultures and ideologies, and we are grateful to be part of a country where the possibilities to bring people together are seemingly endless.

And there are two great possibilities to join us this weekend! This Sunday in Downtown Flint, we’ll gather on the roof of the Rutherford Parking Ramp, where students from Limonest, France, will join members of the Flint Youth Symphony Orchestra to provide a family-friendly concert, just before fireworks light the sky. What’s Up Downtown will be onsite to provide games and activities for kiddos, DJ Brian Larkin will pump up the jams before the orchestra takes the stage, and like America, the event is completely FREE.

If you can’t join us Sunday, the Flint Youth Symphony and our guests from France will reprise their program on the 4th of July at Crossroads Village. This program will happen regardless of weather, and the historic setting of the Village will provide the perfect ambiance to get folks into a patriotic mood.   

No matter how you choose to celebrate in the coming days, we wish you a very Happy Independence Day!
