Host Families Needed
Through its International Exchange Program, the Flint Youth Symphony Orchestra has hosted and been hosted by youth orchestras from France, England, Ireland, Scotland and Japan. Through these exchanges, participants share music and culture, and develop life-long friendships.
What does it mean to be a host?
Hosts provide a place for their foreign guests (preferably at least 2 guests) to stay overnight during their time in the Flint area.
Hosts provide many of the meals for their guests.
Hosts provide transportation. Sometimes guests will need to be dropped off and picked up at FIM. They may also need rides to and from other locations. In the past, some families have worked together to do carpooling.
Hosts provide family support for their guests. Many of the guests are young- middle and high school age, and often this is their first time overseas. Host families support their guests through this exciting, but stressful time.
Host families provide cultural experiences for their guests. Just staying with the host family is a great way for the guests to experience a new culture. However, host families are encouraged to introduce their guests to local foods (i.e. Koegel’s hot dogs, slurpees) as well as activities (i.e., nature trails, board games).
Staying with host families is always a highlight for our visiting musicians.
Please consider being a host!

Message from the Executive Office
Have you heard the news? Music icon Boz Scaggs is rocking the stage under the stars at the Capitol Theatre tomorrow night! Limited tickets remain for this legendary performance, so call our box office to find out how to make this must-see concert part of your weekend.
Tonight, you can catch Canja de Boa at the FIA at 6 pm, as the weekly Friday Night Patio series continues through the end of the month. Next week, the FIM Music Around Town program will partner with For-Mar Nature Preserve and Genesee County Health System to provide a free, sensory-friendly concert at For-Mar. The event from 11-1 pm on Wednesday, is free to attend and welcomes all ages and abilities. And on Thursday, FIM will contribute to the citywide 810 Day Celebration, with a free pop-up performance by the Eclipse Band on the outdoor stage at Xolo, starting at 8 pm. All are welcome!
While you’re enjoying the many performances around town, don’t forget that you and your kids can become performers as well! Enrollment is open for the Fall term at the Flint School of Performing Arts for a wide variety of classes and private lessons for students of all ages. This includes music and dance instruction, as well as our Flint Youth Theatre, which now resides in the FSPA. In fact, we are eager to show off this group next Friday, August 11, as they perform their summer production, The Rude Mechanicals, on the new Atrium Garden Stage at the Dort Music Center. This show is free to attend, and we hope you’ll come support some talented young people who’ve worked hard to produce it. (Bonus: It’s just a short walk from the stage to the registration window to sign your family up for lessons!)
Sincerely,
Rodney Lontine
