Back to the Basics

6–8 years old

Create a work of art using wood, nails, and string! Make a marble maze that you can play with friends. End the day with music by making a tambourine from bottle caps, nails, and wood.

The Farm Stool

9–12 years old

The traditional three-legged stool or Milking Stool originates from nineteenth-century England. Join us in creating your own version! You will sand, saw, hammer, and drill as you craft your stool. Add a personal touch with carving.

Handbuilt Ceramics

Tuesdays, October 10 – November 7

6–9 pm

Over the course of five weeks, you will create ceramic pieces using various hand-building techniques. Each week, participants will learn the essential skills and techniques to make handbuilt dishes, sculptures, tiles, and more.

Electronics

Wednesdays, October 11 – November 8

6–9 pm

Learn the basics of electronics and then apply that knowledge by constructing a series of increasingly complex projects on breadboards.

Adirondack Chairs

Thursdays, October 12 – November 9

6–9 pm

Create an Adirondack Chair while learning about different tools and techniques.

Game Night Begins in October

Join us on Friday, October 6, from 6–8:30 pm, for the first Fantasy Game Night of the year! Registration is open for all Game Night events. This program is limited to participants aged 10–15.

What do apprentices at the Eli Whitney Museum do?

Apprentices are key to the success of the Eli Whitney Museum. Our diverse team of apprentices learn about woodworking, electronics, and production. They become teachers and leaders during year-round weekend shifts, vacation day programs, and summer camps.

What's up at the Whitney Workshop?

Welcome to New Staff Members!

Jaylen (JT) Evans joined the EWM team at the start of summer to lend a much-appreciated hand as one of our Care Coordinators.

JT completed his GED in Carpentry from Shriver Job Corps in Devens, MA. Since graduating in 2020, JT has been active in the New Haven community through organizations like Ice the Beef and Unite Here.

We are thrilled to have JT stay on as a full-time team member as the new Weekend Supervisor!

Martina Roca-Gonzalez joined the museum as this year's Design Intern. Martina is the 4th intern to take part in this program.

Martina spent her childhood in Barcelona and later moved to Hamden, where she first experienced the Eli Whitney Museum & Workshop as a camper.

Martina received a degree from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in architectural studies. She is very excited to help the museum's production shop!

The Eli Whitney Museum & Workshop is partnering with Edgerton Park for the 35th annual Sunday in the Park.

Partnership with the New Haven Museum

Visit the New Haven Museum on the first Saturday of every month beginning October 7. Build special projects taught by Eli Whitney Museum apprentices.

Open Studios: Amplify the Arts

October 14, 1–7 pm & October 15, 2–6 pm

The 2nd Annual Amplify the Arts Festival will be hosted at the Eli Whitney Museum Barn on October 14 and 15. This festival strives to amplify the voices and perspectives of youth, LGBTQ+, and BIPOC communities in Hamden, CT. Find out more at hamdenamplifythearts.

Boundless Education hosts Sunday Morning Math at the Eli Whitney Museum

Boundless Education has been teaching talented math students in CT for over 25 years. Registration for the fall 8-week sessions is now open.

Advanced Problem Solving I: For advanced math students in 6th – 7th grades. Sundays 10–11 am.

Advanced Problem Solving II: For advanced students in grades 8-9 who have completed one year of algebra in school. Sunday 11 am–12 pm.
