Potential cuts to Medicaid put access to affordable healthcare at risk for thousands of Virginians

VIRGINIA - On May 22, 2025, elected leaders and Virginians with personal Medicaid stories called out Winsome Earle-Sears for her silence as Medicaid cuts threaten Virginians’ access to affordable healthcare. Sears recently declined to comment on the proposed cut which would result in more than 200,000 Virginians losing their insurance.

“There are thousands of other Virginians like me, who rely on Medicaid for countless different reasons. Right now, we are facing instability and uncertainty and unfortunately, Republican leaders don’t seem to care. Winsome Earle-Sears won’t even acknowledge the situation that so many of us are facing. Her silence is deafening and shows once again she won’t fight for Virginians,” said Katina Moss, Virginian with a personal Medicaid story.

“Medicaid is essential to home care workers and the people we care for. Without Medicaid, Virginians, who are home care workers will lose their jobs and their patients will lose access to essential services, quality care, and access to affordable care will cease to exist. What has Winsome Earle-Sears said about Virginians losing their jobs and access to affordable care? Absolutely nothing,” said Thomasine Wilson, home care worker and SEIU representative.

“As Republicans in Congress are on the brink of making prices higher and making it even harder to get by for Virginia families, Winsome Earle-Sears has stayed silent. She has refused to comment on any of the potential cuts and has stood by as Virginians face uncertainty. She’d rather play political games than fight for Virginians. That’s not leadership,” said State Senator Jennifer Boysko.

“For Virginians, these cuts to Medicaid would be devastating and the Commonwealth deserves a leader who understands that. Sears owes Virginians answers about why she isn’t fighting to protect Medicaid and why she won’t speak out against the cuts that could hurt thousands of Virginians,” said Virginia Delegate Joshua Cole.
