DEJA VU: Dave Reichert Campaigns with Anti-Abortion Extremist Group – Again

Government and Politics

October 22, 2024

Firmly Planted Action wants to “END ABORTION once and for all!” and “[praised] God” when several Planned Parenthood locations shut down across the country.

Seattle, WA — On Oct 21st, Dave Reichert attended another campaign event hosted by Firmly Planted Action, an anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQIA+ extremist group. Other far-right extremist groups, including Turning Point USA and the Family Policy Institute of Washington, were also in attendance.

This past weekend, Reichert was also interviewed by Heidi St. John, Firmly Planted Action’s president, who has compared getting an abortion to murder. St. John hasn’t been shy about supporting Reichert for governor, urging her followers to vote for him.

This isn’t the first time Reichert has campaigned with Firmly Planted Action. As reported by KUOW, in April, Reichert chose to hold his first town hall in years with the extremist group, and while there, he told his supporters how they could “unravel” affordable abortion services in Washington State. Reichert’s decision to join Firmly Planted Action on the trail once again shows he cannot be trusted to protect or expand reproductive rights in Washington State if elected.

Reichert’s repeat appearance with Firmly Planted Action comes as he desperately tries to deceive voters about his unpopular anti-choice stance, even falsely claiming the national abortion bans he repeatedly supported in Congress weren’t bans but similar to “hunting regulations.”

“Dave Reichert doesn’t care about protecting our fundamental rights and freedoms – he only cares about appeasing his MAGA buddies and donors,” said Shasti Conrad, Chair of the WA State Democrats. “Just like when he was in Congress, Reichert can’t be trusted to do what’s right.”

Reichert’s anti-abortion congressional record includes:

  • Voting for three national abortion bans (October 2017, May 2015, and June 2013) that would have imposed criminal penalties on physicians who violated the ban with a maximum five-year jail sentence.
    •  Voting twice (2015, 2017) against amendments that would have added an exception in order to protect the mother’s health.
  • Voting AGAINST several pieces of legislation that protected women from being fired at work for getting an abortion or using birth control.
  • Voting nearly twenty times to block federal funding for Planned Parenthood and affordable abortion services.
  • Voting to allow health care providers to deny abortions in 2016.
  • Voting to make it a crime to help abortion-seeking minors travel across state lines to avoid parental notification laws.
  • Voting repeatedly to restrict access to contraception, including as recently as 2018.
