EUGENE V. THAW GALLERY FOR WORKS ON PAPER

Paul Goesch (1885–1940) produced one of the most inventive, peculiar, and poignant bodies of work to emerge from Weimar Germany. An artist and architect, he made both fanciful figurative drawings and visionary architectural designs. The latter, in a riot of colors, drip with invented ornament and resemble little made then or since.

The Clark’s exhibition, drawn primarily from the collections of the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, is the first solo presentation of Goesch’s work in North America. Click here to find out more.

VISIONARY ARCHITECTURE ON FILM SERIES:
THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI

Presented in connection with the exhibition Portals: The Visionary Architecture of Paul Goesch, this film series explores themes related to Goesch’s life and work in early twentieth-century Germany.

The Cabinet of Dr. Cagliari may be the quintessential film of German Expressionism. A hypnotist uses a sleep-walking man to commit murder—and the absurdity of the plot is rivaled only by the film’s bizarre and elaborate set designs. Beyond its visual delights, Dr. Caligari critiques both the absurdity of bureaucracy and the interwar German government.

ARTISTS' BOOKS WEEKEND: BOOK ARTIST IN CONVERSATION—ANGELA LORENZ

Celebrate Artists’ Books Weekend with special guest and internationally recognized book artist Angela Lorenz. 

Director of the Library Andrea Puccio leads a lively conversation with Lorenz as they delve into the stories behind some of her creations in the Clark library’s collection and her personal philosophy of what constitutes a book. The Clark library holds more than thirty books by Lorenz, who, through her exquisitely crafted works and thought-provoking content, pushes us to expand our commonly accepted notion of what a book is.

This lecture is presented in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Manton Research Center building. Located in the Manton Research Center, the Clark library houses more than 5,400 books designed/created by artists as stand-alone works of art.

MANTON 50TH ANNIVERSARY FILM SERIES: FILMS OF 1973—LOVE AND ANARCHY

A tragicomedy from director Lina Wertmuller, Love and Anarchy plumbs the depths of fascist Italy from the perspective of a simple farm boy sent to kill Mussolini. A film of operatic emotion and subversive comedy, Love and Anarchy is a powerful statement on the terror of fascism and the ignoble fates of those who challenge it.

This film series is presented in celebration of the 1973 opening year of the Manton Research Center building.

MEMBER FRIDAYS: CELEBRATE WOMEN ARTISTS AT THE CLARK
