Are You Coming to the Party?

Friday December 1st 2023 is THE 50th anniversary of the founding of the Cinema Arts Centre. We've been celebrating all year with a variety of 50th anniversary events, including our CAC Through the Decades series featuring a special screening and reception of favorite films from each decade we've been open. This series culminates on December 1st with a FULL-FACILITY PARTY! Choose 1 of three films, THE GODFATHER, NASHVILLE, or LILITH - after the screenings, there will be a great party with live music, appetizers, and more. Each ticket-holder will receive a copy of our 50th Anniversary Keepsake Journal with historic pictures and information, as well as special messages from our members.

Foster Hirsch Releases New Book

Professor Foster Hirsch is a long-time collaborator and friend of the Cinema, and the host of our beloved Film Noir Classics series. In celebration of the release of Foster's new book, Hollywood and the Movies of the Fifties, we are launching a new series, dedicated to films from the 1950s!

Join us Monday, October 30th at 7:30 PM for the first film in the series, a screening of the iconic 50's romantic comedy musical, FUNNY FACE, starring Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire!

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Foster, in conversation with author, editor, and historian Victoria Wilson, as well as an audience Q&A, and special reception with live music! Copies of Hollywood and the Movies of the Fifties will be available!

Over the past few years the discussion about the concept of “privilege” has intensified and is hotly debated in various contexts, including social, political and economic spheres. “Privilege", in these contexts, usually refers to the concept of advantages, benefits, or access to resources that are available to certain individuals or groups simply because of their identity, background, or social status.

Advocates for understanding privilege emphasize the importance of recognizing one's own privilege as a way to promote empathy and social justice; saying that these advantages are often invisible to those who possess them, as they are considered the norm in society. Critics see the focus on privilege leading to unfair guilt and defensiveness among those who are deemed privileged. Many believe that arguments about privilege tend to focus on group-based attributes rather than individual experiences and oversimplify complex societal issues.

At this meetup, we will discuss this complex topic and explore questions such as:

- What do you think about when you think about “privilege”?
- Do you see yourself as an advocate or a critic of focusing on privilege?
- What do you see as the purpose of discussions of privilege?
- Do you think there are ways in which you are privileged? Have you personally experienced or noticed any access or benefits to you due to these privileges?
