Amplifying Community Voices in Portsmouth Square's Revamp

Chinatown’s “Living Room” Portsmouth Square is soon to be renovated. With its remodel, is an exciting opportunity to present a diversified story in the park. As a leader in uplifting the community’s voice, CCC is a leading advocate in the Chinatown Arts & Culture Coalition to better recognize the community and immigrants’ role in civil rights history that is currently absent from the Square. Read more from the SF Chronicle on how the current monuments do not recognize Asian Americans as part of the neighborhood fabric.

A Request for Qualification (RFQ) on New Artwork will be announced in late May 2024 by San Francisco Arts Commission for Portsmouth Square, along with Chinatown Public Health Center and Chinatown Library. CCC is excited to collaborate with the San Francisco Arts Commission to ensure equitable outreach and input from the community. We are grateful for President Peskin's support for the community engagement process.

“OUT/? MUSEUM”

We are proud to present the upcoming edition of the 41 Ross Artist-in-Residence, “OUT/? MUSEUM” featuring queer artist-activist Xiangqi Chen, starting April 11 through June 29, 2024.

Chen will transform 41 Ross into the "OUT/? MUSEUM," a queer museum prototype with the dream of realizing an institution that will collect, safeguard, and showcase China's queer movement, art, and stories.

You are invited to a reception on April 12th, 5:30 - 9:00 pm to meet the artist during the Chinatown Night Market celebration.

As “OUT/? MUSEUM” coincides with APA Heritage Month and Pride Month, CCC will also be hosting a series of events spotlighting queer and feminist artists. Don't miss out! Follow us on Instagram.

Book Talk with author Curtis Chin

The first of these events will be a book talk on May 25 featuring renowned writer and film producer, Curtis Chin, author of "Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant".

Chin's memoir recounts the coming of age and coming out journey through 1980's Detroit as he navigated rising xenophobia, the AIDS epidemic, and the Reagan Revolution - all set against the backdrop of his family's popular Chinese restaurant.

Join us on April 19 at Edge on the Square, "Chinatown Rebels" is a featured event of the SF Urban Film Fest's 10th Anniversary "Rooted Resurgence".

Following the film screening, Hoi Leung, Deputy Director and Co-Curator of CCC, will lead a panel discussion about the future of Chinatown, including topics such as the ongoing Portsmouth Square revamp, the history of CCC’s 750 Kearny location, and more!
