From: Moeller Fine ArtToday marks a significant milestone—40 years ago, on October 11, 1984, I opened my gallery at 52 East 76th Street in New York. Having launched my career as an independent art dealer in London 12 years prior, I was eager to return to the heart of the art world. I hope you’ll indulge me as I reflect on this anniversary.
My start in New York was helped along by the critic John Russell, who wrote in the New York Times, “In this first exhibition in the Achim Moeller Gallery, the dominant figure is Lyonel Feininger….But the presence of a fan painted by Paul Gauguin, a flower piece by Odilon Redon and a characteristic small painting by Graham Sutherland suggests that the sympathies of the house extend far beyond Central Europe. It will be a pleasant place to drop into.”
Serendipitously, this anniversary coincides with our placement of a magnificent sculpture by Henry Moore (1898–1986), Head, 1984, in the collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art. This coincidence adds a special significance to my celebration of 40 years of business, art, and friendship in New York.
