This Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, join us for a celebration of history with these fascinating tours.
Roots of Cape Island Trolley Tour
On this fascinating, historic tour, hear how whalers centuries ago eked out a dangerous but lucrative living near Town Bank and how the Cape May area’s rich farming heritage continues to be a source of tremendous community pride. Learn about the Union Bethel community in 1831 in which Black residents thrived and the diverse community that continues to contribute to the vibrancy of island life today.
This tour begins and ends at the Ocean Street Trolley Stop, and runs on Saturday, Jan. 14, Sunday, Jan. 15, and again on Saturday, Jan 28. at 11:45 a.m.
Underground Railroad Trolley Tour
Cape May played a notable role in the Underground Railroad. On this tour, hear how legendary anti-slavery fighter, Harriet Tubman, walked these streets, as did Stephen Smith, a formerly enslaved entrepreneur whose railroad cars carried hundreds to freedom. The Underground Railroad Trolley Tour is co-sponsored by the Center for Community Arts.
This tour begins and ends at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth and travels through parts of Cape May and West Cape May, with stops along the way, including the Mt. Zion Cemetery. It will run on Monday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m.
The Cape May Lighthouse Reopens
Additionally, the Cape May Lighthouse will reopen for visitors on Jan. 14, and will remain open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. Climb the 199 steps to take in a wintery panorama of the Delaware Bay.
