From: California African American MuseumNews
As most of you know, Southern California experienced a highly unusual tropical storm August 20-21. Unfortunately, water intrusion occurred in several areas of our facility.
As we survey and repair the damage to our building, we now know we must remain closed at least through October. Public programs slated to happen at CAAM in September and October are postponed.
We are eager to welcome visitors back into the galleries as soon as possible, and will communicate our reopening date when it is firm. In the meantime, in September we are happy to open the exhibition Bahia Reverb: Artists and Place at Art + Practice, and will be presenting related programs there in Leimert Park. Please read on for details.
New Exhibition
Bahia Reverb: Artists and Place
Opening Sept 16, 2023 at Art + Practice
Artist residencies are an important tool for artists to explore site-oriented practices and experience firsthand particular places and cultures. Bahia Reverb: Artists and Place presents the work of ten former fellows at the Sacatar Institute in Bahia, Brazil, all from North America and of African descent, to reflect on how Bahia, an epicenter of the African diaspora, has fueled their work and changed their understanding of themselves.

The Gospel at Colonus at the Getty Villa
Soulful and stirring, this one-of-a-kind theatrical event reimagines Sophocles's Oedipus at Colonus from the 5th century BCE as a redemptive musical celebration. Blending Greek myth with Black spiritual practice, Getty and Chicago's Court Theater have teamed up for this jubilant, life-affirming journey.
