From: Bronx River Art CenterBronx River Art Center (BRAC) is excited to announce our Winter Break Art Camp with special workshop classes for children, teens, young adults, adults, families and older adults.
From Monday, February 20th to Friday, February 24th, BRAC will open its doors to host a series of Art Making Daily Workshops. Classes will take place from 11:00 am to 1:00pm in the morning, and from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the afternoon, with a supervised lunch period from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.
Interested participants can register for 1 Class (for $12), or buy special packages at at special discounts: ONE FULL DAY of classes (for $20), 3 FULL DAYS (for $65), or 5 FULL DAYS (for $100).
BRAC’s professional Teaching and Studio Artists will be running 2 hour workshops with different themes and techniques to explore creativity and enhance your artistic interests.

Monday, Feb. 20
11AM - 1PM
Ages 7 and Up (Parents Welcome)
Instructor: Tammy Wofsey
In this printmaking workshop, participants will make an optical toy called a Thaumatrope (also known as wonder turner): a paper toy with two images that give the illusion of movement. Participants will learn to print their favorite images on each side of a cardboard cut into circles, and make the toy by attaching strings to the sides. The printed creations will delight children and participants of all ages.
BOOK MAKING: Pull-Out Accordion Sketchbook
2PM - 4PM
Ages 13 and Up
Instructor: Tammy Wofsey
Participants will learn to make their own accordion books with pages that are folded and pulled out. This is a terrific book structure because all of the pages can be viewed at once. Participants will work on the foundations of folding, gluing, and cutting paper to make their own sketchbooks.
11AM - 1PM
Ages 10 and Up
Instructor: Hector Canonge
Transform your favorite game characters into Digital Pixel Heroes. Share your creations with your friends and family members through your online devices and social media platforms. Participants will work with Pixel Graphics Apps in BRAC's New Media Lab.
BOARD GAMING: Create Your Game
2PM - 4PM
Ages 10 and Up
Instructor: Hector Canonge
Participants will work on the creation, design and production of a Board Game. From sketching ideas to laying out the Playspace using digital applications, this workshop will introduce the principles and production process of Game Design. At the end, participants will have the opportunity to play each other's games.
Tuesday, Feb. 21
11AM - 1PM
Ages 7 and Up (Parents Welcome)
Instructor: Jennifer Tomaiolo
Learn to work with colors and to explore your creativity through painting. The workshop will focus on foundational skills for the creation of small format paintings using various materials and techniques introduced by the instructor.
2PM - 4PM
Ages 13 and Up
Instructor: Maria Ferrari
In this fun 2 hour Photoshop class, students will learn to create illustrations from a digital sheet of newsprint. Some of the tools used will be selections, layers, brushes, blending modes and more. Any student who learns to master these tools can create all kinds of digital illustrations on their own. All you need is your computer, Photoshop and a good imagination. Can participate from the BRAC Mac Lab or from home.
Wednesday, Feb. 22
11AM - 1PM
Ages 7 and Up (Parents Welcome)
Instructor: Ana Ruiz-Castillo
By using clay, participants will learn how to create a tile using the Low Relief Technique. Students will create a design of their own, and then build it three dimensionally over a slab, using different wooden tools as well as their hands. Students will be able to add some color using underglazes. Tiles will be ready to be picked up after the works are fired.
2PM - 4PM
Ages 10 and Up
Instructor: Ana Ruiz-Castillo
Participants will learn to use the Coiling Technique in Ceramics to create their own bowls with clay. Students will focus on connecting the coils as well as smoothing the piece out. Participants will have the opportunity to apply under-glaze to their bowls by using different colors. Bowls will be ready to be picked up after the works are fired.
Thursday, Feb. 23
11AM - 1PM
Ages 7 and Up (Parents Welcome)
Instructor: Tiffany Miller
If you like drawing and sketching this is for you! Learn how to develop a rough sketch into a polished drawing. Participants will take a visual idea or observation and turn it into a beginning sketch, middle sketch and final drawing! Subjects and samples will be provided.
Cartooning: Character Creation
2PM - 4PM
Ages 7 and Up (Parents Welcome)
Instructor: Gregory Maldonado
Participants in the workshop will learn the basics of shape and gesture drawing to create their own characters for graphic novels and more and cartoons. Examples and practice guidelines will be provided by the instructor, a professional practicing cartoonist and illustrator.
Friday, Feb. 24

Ages 7 and Up (Parents Welcome)
Instructor: Ruth Marshall
As we get ready for Spring, join us in this creative workshop and learn how to work with simple knots and create fun, colorful bracelets. Using nylon cord, these bracelets are durable and waterproof. Textile artist Ruth Marshall, a studio artist at BRAC, will lead this one-time only workshop.
2PM - 4PM
Ages 7 and Up (Parents Welcome)
Instructor: Wildriana Paulino
Create your own sculptures! In this workshop, you will learn how to use paper to create tridimensional shapes and forms. Instructed by Wildriana Paulino, one of the showcasing artists in the Scaling Nature exhibition, this workshop is designed to teach participants how to utilize paper to turn their creative ideas into reality. Participants will learn how to trace, cut, and glue paper. The workshop will include an overview of basic geometric shapes to build and create unique sculptures!
