Aurelio del Muro Balandran

On view until August 26th

Artist Talk: August 9th at 2pm

The Bronx River Art Center's current gallery exhibition, Aurelio del Muro Balandran: Lands of Wandering Souls. Trazos Errantes. will be on view until August 26th.

Del Muro Balandran’s artistic process is rooted in the principles of action art, eschewing planned compositions in favor of intuitive creation. His work juxtaposes forms and shapes drawn from a rich tapestry of influences, including pre-Hispanic and medieval art, art of the Americas, newspaper layouts, and his own subway sketches.

The artist’s evolution is deeply intertwined with his experiences in New York City. Notably, del Muro Balandran was a resident of the Bronx River Art Center Artist Studios Program for four years. This residency provided him with a dedicated space to develop his unique artistic voice and engage with the vibrant artistic community of the Bronx.

This exhibition invites viewers to immerse themselves in the unique visual language, where spontaneity meets cultural depth, and where art serves as a bridge between the artist’s Mexican roots and his evolving artistic journey.

BRONX RIVER ART CENTER (BRAC) RECEIVES HIGHLY-COMPETITIVE, NATIONAL AWARD FROM NEW YORK LIFE FOUNDATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH AFTERSCHOOL ALLIANCE

BRAC to Launch a Free Art After-School Program Called MSCreate Studio

The Bronx River Art Center (BRAC) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $100,000 two-year Aim High grant from the New York Life Foundation. The focus of the Aim High program is to support middle school students to be better prepared for the critical transition into high school. Only ten of these two-year grants are offered across the county.

Aim High grant funding will enable BRAC to launch MSCreate Studio, a free out-of-school-time program to build critical thinking skills in a safe and supportive environment through engagement with a wide array of visual arts. MSCreate Studio emphasizes creative inquiry to improve students’ social skills and self-confidence through presenting their work, offering critiques to peers, and portfolio development for applications to NYC’s competitive arts high schools.

Chaos Theory

The Spectrum of Black Abstraction

September 20 - October 26

The Bronx River Art Center's next gallery exhibition, Chaos Theory: The Spectrum of Black Abstraction, will open Friday, September 20th, 2024.

Featuring the works of black artists, in discussing the themes of the exhibition, curator Ciaran Short invokes the words of humanities scholar Christina Sharpe: “The weather is the totality of our environments; the weather is the total climate; and that climate is anti-black. When the only certainty is the weather that produces a pervasive climate of anti-blackness, what must we know in order to move through these environments...?”
