ANNOUNCING THE RESIDENT ARTISTS OF THE 2024 LONGWOOD @ GOVERNORS ISLAND RESIDENCY PROGRAM
BCA is thrilled to welcome five resident artists as part of the new Longwood @ Governors Island Residency Program, a BCA/Longwood Arts Project effort that makes free studio space available to under-represented and under-resourced Bronx visual artists for the creation of new works. This residency program will run until October 30, 2024.

We encourage visitors to stop by the house to meet the artists and visit the studios located on Colonels Row at House 406B during public viewing hours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
JUNE 5TH - OPENING RECEPTION - BLACK SHEDDING(S)
LONGWOOD ART GALLERY @ HOSTOS
Black Shedding(s) is a group exhibition where each artist's work comes together to tell a collective story. Through visual art, sound production, literary reflections, and educational resources, the viewer is invited into their own contemplation and conversation about diverse quests for liberatory transformation.
Black Shedding(s) highlights BCA's unwavering commitment to the intersection of arts and social justice and to amplifying the voices of artists from under-resourced communities—artists of color, women, and LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Nimíipuu Beading Bracelet Workshop
Tuesday, June 11, 2024 - 4:00 - 5:30 PM
Create your own bracelet using the Afro-Indigenous nimíipuu beading technique! Led by Mikailah, an Afro-Indigenous (nimíipuu) artist and entrepreneur, this workshop invites participating youth to learn how to bead a bracelet using seed beads while engaging in conversation centering Afro-Indigenous experiences and information about nimíipuu beadwork.
Learning the Foundations for Indigo Dyeing
Tuesday, June 18, 2024 - 4:00 - 5:30 PM
Craft a one-of-a-kind piece of art while exploring the rich history and vibrant pigments of the indigo plant. Led by Jaleeca Yancy, participating youth will gain hands-on experience using indigo to dye upcycled fabrics in a unique style.
This workshop series welcomes teenagers between the ages of 12-18. Light refreshments will be provided. MetroCards will be available based on need and upon request.

MAY 27TH - GRANT APPLICATION DEADLINE
ARTS ON THE BLOCK
The application cycle for Arts on the Block is open! Small local organizations and block associations can receive up to $1,500 to cover artist fees for summer events through the BCA's Arts on the Block grant. The goal of the grant is to encourage increased attendance at block parties and single-block festivals in The Bronx with the inclusion of art activities at these events.
The deadline to submit applications is Monday, May 27, 2024 at 11:59 PM.

BCA'S FREE SPRING PERFORMANCE SERIES
BCA's free spring performance series, BX Expressions, is in full swing! Don't miss the last two performances featuring luminaries like the Bronx Arts Ensemble African dance group Kamate Traders Dance Company, and Indigenous Afro-Caribbean drum and dance group Wabafu Garifuna Dance Theatre.

JUNE 18TH - SAVE THE DATE FOR THE OPENING OF NYCHA'S FLOWERS
Design Trust for Public Space and the Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA) present the exhibition NYCHA’s Flowers by Bronx photographer and Design Trust’s Photo Urbanism Fellow Latricia Morgan. Join us for the Opening Reception and Artist Talk on Tuesday, June 18th, from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at BCA HQ (2700 East Tremont Ave, Bronx, NY).
Born and raised at the Ruben Betances Houses in the South Bronx, Latricia documents intergenerational community at NYCHA’s open spaces through portraiture, bringing a lens of luxury to her subjects and uplifting the beautiful bloom and growth of the human spirit, combining mixed-media and texture.

BCA is proud to partner with Creatives Thrive NYC (CTNYC), an organization that helps New York City Artists and Creatives build the financial skills to meet big challenges. CTNYC is a series of free, informative online workshops aimed at providing NYC’s creative workers with real-world financial tools tailored to their specific needs.

Stephanie Griffin is a Bronx-based classical violist and composer who co-curated Concourse Counterpoint with jazz bassist Hilliard Greene. Their innovative salon concert series at the Andrew Freedman Home is the first musical performance series at the venue and the first series offering free classical, contemporary and jazz concerts to the Concourse community. Dominick Torres is an award-winning Nuyorican filmmaker and educator living in the Bronx. His work focuses on uplifting the voices of vulnerable communities and fostering generational healing. DJ Kaykay47 is an international DJ and Community Organizer from The Bronx who boldly creates passion and joy through movement. Through her project, Girls DJ Too, she aims to provide access for girls and women-identified folks in The Bronx to learn DJ skills. Learn more.
