Highlights From The Bert Gallery Exhibit

F. Usher DeVoll (1873 - 1941)
Washington Park in Greenwich Village was a favorite subject matter for F. Usher DeVoll as he cruised the streets of New York City for subjects that he could paint and sell with his gallery, Grand Central Galleries on 56th Street. DeVoll’s New York scenes, particularly his Brooklyn Bridge oils, are very collectable. In this image the Washington Arch is in the background obscured by Spring trees blooming. DeVoll is intrigued by the pedestrians briskly pacing through the park walking dogs or enroute from lunch. A Providence School Artist, DeVoll attended RISD and had a studio in the Providence Arcade Building.

Max Mays (1918 - 2009)
Often identified as a folk artist who used his travels, love of the country and Providence history as the inspiration for his paintings, Max Mays wrote of his style in a 2002 Providence Art Club Show at the age of 84.

“Folk Art today is a much used ‘selling word’ in gallery and antique fields.

There doesn’t seem to be any bona fide definition. I have long since been addicted to folk art because of it’s freshness and exuberance of joy, which is the joy of creativity. It is almost always a happy expression of what the artist wants to say, and if he hasn’t the right words of the standard technique he ‘makes it up”… and says it…and says it plain!"

Pictured above is one of Mays works inspired by the old historical Stage House Inns.

Nancy Dyer (1903-1979)
Like many woman artists of her era, regardless of her advanced art training and obvious talent, she was overshadowed by her famous father. H.A. Dyer was a prominent RI artist and despite his support of Nancy's artistic profession she is often overlooked. Nancy regularly exhibited at the Providence Art Club, was represented by galleries and won national competitions. She was particularly admired for her amusing and insightful caricatures such as this masterly rendered pastel of parade marchers.
