August at Bert Gallery
AT THE GALLERY
We continue to show The Providence School artists from 1850 - 1950 this summer, popular with local visitors.  Call the gallery to tell us when you want to drop by or take a chance and swing by.  Summer is a busy time and we are in and out running our gallery errands!

On View

Still Life with Flowers and Fruit, 1948
Dimensions: 16” x 20”. Housed in period frame.
RISD Museum Sticker verso Annual Rhode Island Artist Exhibit 1949

Gordon Peers (1909 - 1988)
A true-blue Rhode Island artist, attending Classical High School and Rhode Island School of Design.  He retired as the Chairman of the Painting Department at RISD and transitioned from realism to a European Modernist Style.

PARIS MODEL 1924-28, J.D. HERBERT

J.D. Herbert (1898 - 1970)
Oil on Board. Estate stamped verso.
Dimensions: 13” x 10” Paris Model

The portrait is considered one of the highest art forms and this dramatic portrait by Herbert demonstrates his mastery of the subject matter.  Like many American painters of his day, he went to Paris to complement his American art training.  Paris was where he would refine his skills and the result is this striking head portrait that is housed in a Gold Leaf Larson Juhl frame. Another portrait submitted to the Paris Salon won acceptance, a testimony to Herbert’s accomplished painting technique.

UPDATES TO THE WEBSITE

The advance in internet technology is impressive and Bert Gallery has been soldiering on since 1985 trying to keep pace.  However, many of my darn old files need to be updated.   The exciting news is that slowly but surely updates are happening.  Here is the latest.

Under the Collection Menu – ARTIST BIOS are added and MEDIA.  So, you can explore 24 of our posted Providence School artist biographies.

If you are fascinated by the Egg media technique of Marianetti, enjoy the Video from 13 years ago by Providence artists Frank Gasbarro and Kathy Hodge!  The artists used the materials from the Marianetti’s studio to demonstrate egg tempera technique, both educational and enjoyable.

If you have not seen it yet,  HERE  is the video on the Walter Feldman Trust for Artwork, Brown University.

Feldman paintings & prints are housed in the Feldman Trust Studio.  This summer, you can make an appointment to see the studio collection of the Walter Feldman Trust, Brown University by contacting Catherine Bert, The Walter Feldman Trust Curator & Manager at [email protected]
