7:00pm: The Curse (A Praga) "Coffin Joe's" lost film! and Mojica's Last Curse
The Curse (A Praga) "Coffin Joe's" lost film!
As our host Coffin Joe warns us at the very beginning, you shouldn't joke about the unknown. A young couple visiting the countryside fail to heed the warnings of a passing villager, and draw near to the home of a reclusive witch to take some photos. Despite her protests, they take her picture, incurring her wrath and resulting in-The Curse!
Horror icon José Mojica Marins ("Coffin Joe") originally filmed The Curse for his Brazilian TV show in 1967, but that version was lost in a fire at the station in 1969. In 1980, Marins began filming a second version, but production was halted due to financial difficulties. The existing footage went missing until 2007, when producer Eugenio Puppo rediscovered it while preparing a retrospective of Mojica's work. After years of intensive restoration, including shooting new scenes and recovering the lost dialogue with the assistance of a lip-reader (!), the film will make its US debut with this screening.
A short "making of" documentary, "The Last Curse of Mojica" will screen immediately following this feature film.
Mojica's Last Curse
Mojica's Last Curse including its rediscovery by producer Eugenio Puppo 27 years after the primary footage was shot, followed by years of work to restore it and record additional scenes.
