OYSTER EDUCATION PROGRAM WINS AWARD

The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (AMM)’s Oyster Education Program (OEP) engages 1,500 AACPS 6th graders annually in year-round classroom and field-based activities focused on oysters to illustrate concepts from Bay ecology, biology, economics, and local maritime history. OEP curriculum also incorporates solution-based Climate Change and Sea-Level Rise Education, culminating in an on-the-water, boat ride experience and spat planting at Chinks Point, a sanctuary reef in the Severn River. In 2023, our 6th graders planted spat on shell in the Severn, improving local water quality, creating habitat, and restoring the health of this vital Bay tributary. AMM will conduct the OEP for seven middle schools in 2023/2024. We are excited for the opportunity to introduce three new middle schools to the Program and to all things “oyster”!
