Don't miss the final days of Kahori Kamiya's debut New York solo exhibition, Long Eclipse, on view through March 26 at Amos Eno Gallery.
In this collection of work, Kamiya excavates her roots as a Japanese woman and reflects on her personal experiences of motherhood, breastfeeding, racial discrimination during the pandemic, and grief.
According to the Hyperallergic review by Vittoria Benzine, "[Kamiya's] extensive sculpture and performance practice informs the genre-bending paintings across Long Eclipse, particularly the titular work — a large scene lined with kimono sashes, selected to represent both the umbilical cord connecting baby and mother and Kamiya’s Japanese heritage."
Viewers of Kamiay's work will discover semi-figurative drawings, mysterious symbols, and executed materials such as feathers, gold leaves, and crystals.
"Kamiya’s practice is based on personal experience and memories, but through ancient Japanese symbols and the tenets of Buddhism, her art touches even the most cynical of viewers," remarks Kaitlin Anne Vervoort in her review at Arcade Project Zine. "As a resident of New York for the past fifteen years, time has not dampened Kamiya’s ability to transport the viewer back in history while still remaining relevant in today’s world."
