7:30pm - Movie: A Bruddah's Mind (Cabeça de Nêgo) at Lecture Hall 006, in collaboration with Harpur Cinema

Based on real events, this political drama fuses Brazilian history with international anti-racist movements. Saulo, a black introverted student and fan of the Black Panther Movement, challenges his school in the largely white city of Fortaleza.

After Saulo’s reaction to a racial insult from a classmate, his teachers describe him as a young delinquent and swiftly attempt to expel him ignoring his usually calm and articulate demeanor. Outraged, Saulo refuses to leave the school until justice is done. His solitary occupation ends up challenging the school’s board and mobilizes the entire community. The students did not anticipate, however, the principal’s extreme reaction.

Echoing events from around the world, A Bruddah’s Mind effectively calls out racism, misogyny, and militarism. It reminds us about the importance of activism, political engagement, and the sacrifices that come with it.

6:00pm - Movie: Boca Chica at Admissions Center 189

Beautifully juxtaposing the realities and expectations of a young girl approaching womanhood in the Dominican Republic, Boca Chica shines a light on the insidious child sex trade and the lives it seeks to destroy.

Director Gabriella A. Moses exposes the community’s complicity by way of twelve-year-old Desi who is constantly exposed to unwanted advances and crude comments from older men, both visiting and homegrown. She works at the family restaurant alongside her mother Carmen, who encourages the behavior, in a once serene beachside town now bustling with foreign tourists.

Music is Desi’s escape. She dreams of parlaying her nascent musical talents into a full-fledged singing career. When she stumbles across a group of local rappers that set themselves apart from the scene, her passions begin to boil to the surface. She seeks to avoid the common fate of growing mature before her time and falling prey to the morally bankrupt adults in her life who encourage her to forgo her innocence for profit.

Boca Chica explores themes of identity, family, codependency, and truth, and exposes how local social norms present the sexualization of very young girls as a path to survival.

6:00pm - Movie: Perro Bomba: at Admissions Center 189

Steevens is a young Haitian immigrant living a challenging, but somewhat stable life in Santiago de Chile: he has a construction job, a home, friends, and fun.

This precariously balanced life is disrupted when Junior, a childhood friend from Haiti, arrives in Chile seeking assistance from Steevens to establish himself. Junior has entered Chile without papers and doesn’t speak any Spanish. Steevens does everything he can to support his friend and even manages to get him a job with his employer. When an incident at their workplace erupts racial tensions and stokes a large anti-immigration sentiment in the city, Steveens loses his working documents. Now without a job, Steveens has to vacate his home and is left to wander the city, looking for a chance to restart his life beyond the margins of society.

Camilo is a young black man adopted by an indigenous couple in rural Colombia. He is the only black person in his community and has always felt different. For years, he has been wondering about his biological parents. The indigenous Quillasinga-governor gives him Ayahuasca, a sacred remedy for spiritual guidance. During this transcendent experience, Camilo has visions of his biological mother. Supported by his adoptive father, Camilo embarks on a journey to find his true identity and understand his two races.

With unprecedented access to the Quillasinga tribe, Between Fire and Water uncovers the social structure and justice system of this indigenous community. This award-winning documentary invites the audience to witness the traditional values of the Afro-Latin and indigenous peoples, two minority groups in a region that has historically rejected both, through this profound and personal coming of age experience.

The 2018 elections turned into the biggest political upheaval led by Black women that Brazil has ever seen, in response to the brutal execution of Rio de Janeiro city councilor and activist Marielle Franco. In all states, Black female politicians rose up against the growth of fascism in the country.

In Rio de Janeiro, Mônica Francisco, Rose Cipriano, Renata Souza, Jaqueline de Jesus, Tainá de Paula, and Talíria Petrone joined these unprecedented ranks by running for state and federal deputy. Seeds: Black Women in Power follows these women in various stages throughout their campaigns, transforming mourning into persistence and tenacity and demonstrating the potential of a new politics that centers all marginalized peoples.
