The goal of the Newport Irish Heritage Month calendar is to include “All things Irish” that will be occurring in the Newport, Rhode Island area throughout March. This includes events sponsored by organizations which promote Irish heritage, culture, and history, including the Museum of Newport Irish History, sponsor of this calendar, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. A complete list of participating organizations and businesses may be found at the end of this document.

Historic Irish Cemetery Tour: 12:30 pm
Take a tour of the historic Saint Joseph Cemetery (known locally as the Barney Street Cemetery). Located at the corner of Barney and Mt. Vernon Streets in Newport, is the oldest Catholic cemetery in Rhode Island, and the site of the state’s first Catholic church (1828), which served Newport’s growing Irish immigrant community. Historic Irish Cemetery Tour: 12:30 pm
Take a tour of the historic Saint Joseph Cemetery (known locally as the Barney Street Cemetery). Located at the corner of Barney and Mt. Vernon Streets in Newport, is the oldest Catholic cemetery in Rhode Island, and the site of the state’s first Catholic church (1828)), which served Newport’s growing Irish immigrant community. The outdoor tour of approximately 30 minutes, given by a historian/guide, Steve Marino, and sponsored by Museum of Newport Irish History, is held, weather permitting. Reservations required. Meet at the gate on Kingston Ave. near the intersection with Warner Street. Explore historic Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, final resting place of well over 1,000 Newporters of the mid - 1800s through the early 1900s, including countless immigrants from Ireland and firstgeneration Irish Americans.
