The Journey Home
March 20 - April 20, 2025
Thanks to everyone who stopped by Saturday's opening reception for our two new exhibits - Jo-Ann Acey's The Journey Home and Abstraction By Many Means, a group show in the Project Space.
Acey's The Journey Home is a deeply personal roadmap of joy, memory, and self-reflection. In these abstract paintings, Acey invites audiences to find solace in the concept of “home” and embrace the cycles of personal history. This is the artist's fifth solo exhibiton at 440 Gallery.
Visit 440gallery.com for more information on the artist and the exhibition.

IN THE PROJECT SPACE
Abstraction By Many Means
Ellen Chuse - Hyunju Kim - Catherine Orrok
The Project Space features abstract works by three artists that are quite distinctive. Ellen Chuse, Hyunju Kim, and Catherine Orrok find their influences in different sources, and arrive at their final works via very individual processes. Abstract art has a long and varied history that ranges from representational interpretation to pure geometry. This show invites thoughtful comparison to these artists’ approaches to abstraction.

The recent acrylic paintings on paper by Ellen Chuse highlight her continued exploration of some of the abstract forms that have been part of her visual vocabulary for many years. The circle or oval is an archetypal form that, depending on color and context, can vary dramatically in meaning. As Chuse states, “Ominous or meditative, playful or somber, they engage the viewer through their familiarity, and yet have the capacity to shift and challenge.” Her use of highly saturated color, often put down in layers, is another contributing factor to the emotional resonance of these works. With thoughtful viewing these seemingly simple forms give way to unexpected tensions and movement.
CALL FOR ARTISTS!
Sacred Space
440 Gallery is currently accepting submissions for our 2025 Annual Theme Show, Sacred Space! This year's group exhibition will be juried by artist/curator/dancer Ramona Candy.
Artwork selected for the national juried exhibition will be on display at our gallery from July 10 - August 2, 2025. Artists at all levels of experience and career stages are invited to submit work in all mediums.
Entries should reflect the artist’s interpretation of the theme described below:
Sacred Space - not necessarily meaning a house of worship, or maybe for you, it is. It is wherever you find peace.
What brings you comfort? Is it mountains or the seashore? Maybe your sacred space is in your art studio or your bedroom? In your art practice or your dreams? Perhaps it is within. It is wherever you go to seek refuge, meditate, create….
Does your sacred space have color, rhythm, and texture which can all be explored in your artwork? If so, apply to 440 Gallery’s Annual Theme Show.
Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, April 16.
Submission fees start at $25.
