Keynote Speaker

Robert Doubek

In 1979, Robert Doubek co-founded the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund together with John Wheeler, Jan Scruggs, and others. Later that year he became the Fund’s Executive Director and served in that role and as Project Director through the creation of the memorial in 1983. For their leadership, the three were nominated for the Congressional Gold Medal.

Bob graduated from the University of Illinois in 1966 and served as an Intelligence Officer in the Air Force for four years, including a year in Vietnam in 1969. He then earned a law degree on the GI Bill. Until his retirement a year ago, he spent 20 years with the Department of State where he acquired sites of land around the world to build new U.S. embassies.

In 2015 he published his memoir, which tells the definitive story of the struggle to create the memorial. He resides in Washington with his spouse, Christine Bedoret.
