Our Winter Speaker Series launches on January 16th with Buck Buchanan, who retired from the Pennsylvania Army National Guard as a Brigadier General. Commissioned through the ROTC Program, Buck’s career was mainly in Army Aviation as a helicopter pilot with 33 years of service. He served as an assault helicopter pilot in Vietnam with the 1st Air Cavalry Division for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, 2 Bronze Stars, and 16 Air Metals. The title of his presentation is “The Helicopter War in Vietnam” It will address the types of helicopters used, what life was like for aircrews, and how helicopters were used to move troops and materials around the battlefield, as well as evacuate the wounded. An outline of what the typical day of a helicopter pilot and what flight duties and air missions were performed will explain the role helicopters & their aircrews played in the Vietnam War. The presentation will last about 1.5 hours and end with questions from the guests. This presentation is not graphic and children are welcome to join us.
